Dive Brief:
- To the surprise of few, the San Francisco area leads the nation in tech job over the last five years, according to a new study.
- The area added more than 120,000 tech jobs in that time and they make up more than 10% of all jobs, according to the study by real estate services firm CBRE.
- More than 17,000 tech workers left the Boston area in that time, but it still had a 13% growth rate in tech jobs, the study reported.
Dive Insight:
The survey, in many ways, contains few surprises: Tech jobs are a huge factor in overall employment in many urban areas, and it's easy to match the biggest gains among cities with the headquarters of major digital companies. Computerworld also points out that it's reasonable to assume some of those Boston tech emigrants simply headed to the Bay Area.
In what might be a surprise to people outside of the industry (or the DC area), the Washington area has the second-highest concentration of tech jobs in the country, the survey states. More than 8% of all jobs in the region are in the tech sector, and there was a 24% growth rate in those jobs in the last five years.
But tech jobs in several other metro areas grew even faster on a percentage basis. In fact, virtually every major U.S. city had a tech job growth rate above 10%, the survey stated.
