Dive Brief:

As old-school, file-based systems are increasingly being replaced with object-based approaches, an alliance of companies including Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital are working with the Linux Foundation to develop the Kinect Open Storage Project, which will strive to provide “open source object storage on next generation, Ethernet-enabled storage devices.”
-
The approach reportedly reduces overhead and allows vendors to “pack more drives into their racks.”
-
The companies involved said the alliance strives to be a neutral player that can help manage such projects and create a place where rival companies can work together.
Dive Insight:
Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, said the companies also know they must work together because the project is too big for one of them to take on alone.
“If a project is singularly led, owned and maintained by a single company, you’ll hit the glass ceiling at some point,” he said.
