Dive Insight:
"The message is clear — CIOs have to find a way to reinvent their IT organizations; otherwise, they risk dragging down their businesses or getting replaced by service providers that can accomplish what they can't," said Joe Pucciarelli, Group Vice President & IT Executive Advisor of the IDC IT Executive Programs.
Among other things, the firm predicted that by 2018, "45% of CIOs will shift their primary focus from physical to digital and move away from BPM and optimization to deliver scale, predictability and speed."
Digital transformations in businesses is underway, and to stay competitive companies have to leverage emerging technologies and move on from legacy systems. Gartner has pointed to the increased presence of artificially intelligent technologies in the coming years to help businesses work at a quicker pace. Other research firms, such as IDC, are also pointing toward an increased rate of change in IT portfolios in the enterprise.
By 2017, IDC predicts that 80% of CIOs will have global risk portfolios to allow for more adaptive responses to "security, compliance, business or catastrophic threats." Part of that is recognizing the limits of traditional IT. By 2019, IDC says 75% of CIOs will find that limit and start embracing a leadership model that allows for a "virtuous cycle of innovation."
