Dive Insight:
Slack is coming off the high of its debut on the New York Stock Exchange last Thursday. Just over a week later, it is facing a global outage.
Slack has prided itself as a solution for universal communication, even threatening the relevancy of email.
Friday's reported down times are mostly an anomaly for the company, which on average, reports an uptime between 99.95% and 100%, according to the company's status history.
Last year the company announced an internal renovation that included the addition of a "safety security team" to curb the frequency of outages. At the time, Slack revealed it had reported about 40 days of outages and 51 days of incidents that resulted in reduced functionality.
There are always subtleties that go how companies define an outage. As Slack grows in size and dominance following its direct listing, the company will continuously have to adjust to the demands of customers and chaos engineering.
