Dive Brief:
- A new report from Appirio and Wakefield Research found 25% of IT projects today are abandoned as a result of a shortage of IT workers, says CIO.
- 90% of respondents to Appirio’s survey agreed that recruiting and retaining technology talent is a major business challenge.
- The report also found that a surprising 25% of IT staffers leave their positions each year.
Dive Insight:
The report, “IT Talent Wars and the Gig Economy," was released Thursday. In addition to abandoned projects, the report also found that a lack of IT talent can result in project delays of an average of five months.
Some companies have taken to hiring IT talent on a freelance – or “gig” basis -- as a way to help them reach their IT goals. The report found 84% of C-suite respondents see the economy shifting more toward gig-based work by 2050.
In all, the report found more than one-third of most HR budgets now go exclusively toward recruiting IT talent.
“The intense competition for tech talent has placed a major strain on the enterprise,” said Chris Barbin, CEO of Appirio. “Those in the tech and services industries spend too much time talking about the systems they are implementing, and not enough on the talent needed to architect, develop, or manage those systems."
