Dive Brief:
- OpenAI introduced an updated model Monday, which is two times faster and 50% cheaper than GPT-4 Turbo, CTO Mira Murati said during a live stream.
- GPT-4o, the company’s first multimodal model, can accept and generate text, audio and imagery. OpenAI said the model — where the “o” stands for “omni” — matches GPT-4 Turbo’s performance on text in English and code.
- The company said GPT-4o will roll out to ChatGPT Free, Plus and Team users beginning Monday, while Enterprise users will get access to the tool in the future.
Dive Insight:
Among its spring updates, OpenAI offered more ways to access and interact with models, launched a ChatGPT desktop app and enhanced its user interface, including new layouts for the home screen.
The persistent wave of vendor updates has kept enterprises intrigued, but it has also exacerbated some business problems, like shadow IT.
ChatGPT was the most common tool to enter the enterprise tech stack without proper approval, according to Productiv analysis. More than three-quarters of employees admit to bringing their own AI tools to work as governance frameworks fail to keep up with adoption, Microsoft and LinkedIn’s research found.
As the pioneering generative AI provider, OpenAI has also grappled with its fair share of legal woes, from allegations of copyright infringement to data privacy violations.
Nonetheless, OpenAI’s reach has expanded.
Murati said ChatGPT has brought in more than 100 million users since its release, with more than 1 million users creating customized GPTs. The company said in November more than 9 in 10 Fortune 500 companies had used its AI products.
The company has also hosted hundreds of Fortune 500 company executives in cities around the world to pitch its AI services, and in some cases, going head to head with Microsoft, Reuters reported last month.
Because GPT-4o is multimodal, the model is likely to be compared to Google’s Gemini family of models. Apple is also dabbling in multimodal large language model development, according to a March research paper.
