Dive Brief:
-
Massachusetts CIO Bill Oates has retired, according to the National Association of State Chief Information Officers.
-
Oates became CIO of the commonwealth in January 2014 after serving as the CIO of Boston for seven years. No information about Oates’ replacement has been announced yet.
-
Since April, the CIOs of New York, Seattle and Chicago also have resigned.
Dive Insight:
Government CIOs appear to be seeking greener pastures. In April, Carole Post, CIO and commissioner of the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications, accepted a job with the New York University Law School, while Bill Schrier, CIO of Seattle, joined a private-sector company. In June, Chicago CIO Jason DeHaan announced he was resigning. The departure of several major-city CIOs may make it difficult for governments to continue gain traction with major IT projects.
