Dive Brief:
- Janco Associates’ latest handbook of corporate IT jobs, expected to be released this week, found the diversity of IT-related job titles is expanding.
- Janco identified a total of 273 job titles, up from less than 100 when they first began tracking IT job titles in 1989.
- Three new positions were added to the 2016 handbook – Internet-of-Things manager, Android programmer and manager of green initiatives.
Dive Insight:
Janco’s latest annual handbook offers a glimpse into IT’s growing importance in day-to-day business operations, said Janco Chief Executive M. Victor Janulaitis.
As technology’s business role has evolved, Janulaitis said, “the role that IT managers have in core business systems has expanded.”
IoT managers may be the fastest growing of the new roles. According to the Janco report, the IoT manager role calls for a manager who would oversee the use of high-tech sensors designed to gather data on customers, clients, users and other sources.
A key challenge for the IoT manager, according to the handbook, is to ensure the collecting of reliable data that can “readily support the enterprise’s daily business operations.”
Typically, all of the new and old IT roles report to the CIO.
