Correction: A previous version of this article stated that Stevenson took over for Kirk Skaugen, the former head of Intel’s client computing group.
Dive Brief:
- Intel announced Monday the appointment of Paula Tolliver as corporate vice president and CIO.
Tolliver was previously corporate vice president of business services and CIO at Dow Chemical. - Tolliver is replacing Kim Stevenson, who become chief operating officer for the Client and Internet of Things Businesses and Systems Architecture (CISA) Group.
- Stevenson’s new role falls under Venkata "Murthy" Renduchintala’s division, the Client and IoT Business and Systems Architecture Group.
Dive Insight:
Intel has worked to pivot its focus, as the traditional chip-making market has struggled. In April, Intel announced plans to cut 11% of its global workforce—up to 12,000 positions—by mid-2017. The executive shuffle is part of Intel's overarching effort to look toward newer technologies like artificial intelligence and IoT.
Last year, Intel president Renée James announced she was stepping down. In April, leaders in Intel’s mobile and wearable units also announced they would leave the chip maker. Kirk Skaugen, head of Intel’s client computing group, departed in April to pursue his "next career opportunity."
Hiring Tolliver is further proof that Intel is also moving away from hiring almost all its executives from within to looking to outside executives to help it shift its strategy and culture. In November, Intel hired Renduchintala, a former Qualcomm executive to serve as president of Client and IoT Businesses and Systems Architecture Group and Executive Vice President.
