Dive Insight:
Carter's retirement marks the end of a long chapter in FedEx's transformation story.
Under the executive's leadership, FedEx carried out an IT renewal effort aimed at simplifying and updating the company's IT estate. The process sought to reverse the IT complexity left behind after decades of acquisitions and expansions, and create more flexible, faster-to-market technology capabilities.
Raj Subramaniam, who took the reins as president and CEO from founder Fred Smith in 2022, credited Carter with modernizing the IT infrastructure the company uses to ship 15 million packages per day globally.
“I am immensely grateful to Rob for his numerous contributions in establishing FedEx as an innovative, data-driven, and people-focused company," Subramaniam said in the Monday announcement. The CEO specifically highlighted Carter's role in enabling real-time tracking and transactions for the organization.
With a modernized IT estate, the company has been working to expand its digital services, including a new platform called fdx currently in private preview. The platform, which provides online merchants with end-to-end solutions, is slated for an official launch this fall.
The company has also worked to infuse services with ML and AI to improve delivery time projections.
The task at hand for Krishnasamy will be to continue pursuing transformation, turning FedEx into a "data-driven, digital-first company" as he takes over IT leadership, Subramaniam said.
