Dive Brief:
- Cisco and Pivotal Software reached an agreement Tuesday to offer each other’s cloud computing products.
- Both companies will sell Pivotal’s Cloud Foundry, which allows developers to build and run cloud software, according to a Fortune report.
- In turn, each company will also sell Cisco’s Metapod service, which helps adapt data centers for the cloud.
Dive Insight:
Though Cisco dominates the field of networking technology, the company does not usually come to mind as a major cloud provider. But that could change as Cisco continues to try and break into new markets.
In its latest earnings report, Cisco said it has struggled with data centers and switching, in products like networking and storage. To remain profitable, Cisco has tried to increase its service and product offerings.
Over the past year, Cisco has made 17 acquisitions in areas such as cloud storage, video, analytics and security. Earlier this month, Cisco acquired Jasper Technologies, which provides an IoT platform to connect devices. Its latest agreement with Pivotal could help the company increase its cloud offerings.
