Dive Brief:
- Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) collaborating with detectives from the Metropolitan police's cybercrime unit (MPCCU) arrested a 15-year-old boy in Northern Ireland for actions related to the cyber-attack on TalkTalk.
- The boy, who has not been named, was arrested on suspicion of Computer Misuse Act offences. The teenager has been "bailed to a date in November" the Metropolitan Police said.
- TalkTalk, a UK-based phone and broadband provider with more than four million customers said that while bank details and personal information could have been accessed, credit and debit card numbers had not been stolen. However initial reports said data had shown up on the dark web.
Dive Insight:
Experts say the attack, the third in a year, opens TalkTalk up for an exodus of customers. Police are investigating whether the company has done enough to protect data. According to a data protection attorney who spoke with The Telegraph, if TalkTalk has not taken reasonable actions to protect customers information, contract termination fees will not apply to anyone who wants out of a contract.
