Dive Brief:
- During the first weekend of Apple’s new iPhone sales last year, the company sold 10 million units. Sales of the latest iPhones, announced last week, are on target to beat that number, says Apple, though the company did not disclose the exact number of preorders it has received.
- Analysts expected the company to log about 4.5 million preorders during the first 24 hours, Reuters reports.
- The iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will begin shipping Sept. 25.
Dive Insight:
Apple said demand for the iPhone 6S Plus has already exceeded its forecasts. The new phones were announced during Apple’s signature fall event in San Francisco last week.
The iPhone 6S and 6S plus include numerous upgrades, including a better camera, faster processer, more RAM and better battery life.
FBR Capital Markets senior analyst Daniel Ives said the preorders suggest good news for Apple.
“It shows that they are off to a white-hot start, with China really being front and center as a main driver of initial demand,” he said. “Hopefully this can start to turn the negative tide that’s been overhanging the stock.”
Apple also announced new versions of Apple TV, Apple Watch and the iPad last week.
