Dive Brief:
- Amazon announced 5% price cuts on three of its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Linux-based computing services, Fortune reported.
- The company enhanced its Cost Explorer tracking tool, allowing customers to further monitor Amazon Web Services (AWS) costs with advanced filtering and grouping.
- Amazon also unveiled WorkMail, a product that will help it shift its strategy slightly to pursue larger enterprise customers.
Dive Insight:
Amazon’s move is the first such major announcement regarding cloud services pricing in a while. Google announced its last set of cloud price cuts back in May. Amazon said customers can also lock in bigger per-hour discounts by committing to a one- or three-year contract for what it refers to as a “reserved” instance.
The availability of WorkMail shows how Amazon is hoping to push into higher-level services used by CIOs and other leaders. AWS originally built much of its business by targeting tech-savvy developers with limited budgets.
AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google are currently the three major players in public cloud computing.
