Dive Insight:
Miller will replace Marcello Damiani, current chief digital officer at Moderna. Damiani is set to retire in March after a seven-year stint with the company.
In 2020, Moderna announced it selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider. The announcement came as the company took part in the global race to develop an effective vaccine for the coronavirus. The cloud deal allowed Moderna access to AWS’s data warehousing service, Amazon Redshift, which helped the company aggregate results from dozens of experiments.
At the time, many pharmaceutical companies were trying to catch up to other industries' maturity in digital adoption.
In May of 2019, just seven of the 30 pharma and biotech companies valued at more than $10 billion had a CIO or chief data officer in its C-suite, BioPharma Dive reported. Six of the seven had been appointed within the two previous years.
Miller brings to Moderna his experience using digital and IT solutions to solve business problems which the company will need as it continues to grow globally, according to Bancel.
